Wilcox Environmental Engineering recently utilized the new Geoprobe® Direct Image® MiHpt, which combines a Membrane Interface Probe (MIP) and a Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) testing. The MIP technology provides high resolution profiling of the distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the subsurface, which allows for more efficient, real-time contaminant delineation and site characterization. The HPT system provides a continuous estimate of the hydraulic conductivity of saturated soils and thus identifies horizons with the greatest potential for lateral migration of dissolved contamination. The combination of these two technologies not only expedites site characterization but also facilitates the design and placement of groundwater monitoring wells to avoid the excess costs of multiple mobilizations when using traditional, multi-step boring and sampling methods.
